When an unopened Martian cylinder is discovered in the mountains of Wales in 1913, the people of Britain brace themselves for another invasion from Mars. Soon they learn the shocking news that the vengeance-seeking Martians and their invincible tripods are already on their way back. This time they are armed with a doomsday weapon, able to destroy all bacteria and completely extinguish life on our planet. With time and hope running out fast the original characters become caught up in events, but what on Earth can they do to survive and escape this new Martian apocalypse?

Once again the writer and his wife find their ordinary, comfortable lives thrown into turmoil as England battles to eradicate this new Martian terror.

This is the second in a trilogy of sequels written (and played as in musically) by H.E. WIlburson to the wonderful WotW. Now I mentioned played, and this benefits so much from being an audiobook, as H.E has written and plays his own music to accompany the books he has written, and in that respect it is more a sequel to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
I have to say that H.E, has an uncanny knack of writing like H.G Wells, and has continued the story in exactly the same Late Victorian/ Early Edwardian style that it is seamless. He has also managed to doff his cap at H.G Wells with a number of tributes that will be recognised by those very familiar to WotW, and Wells' writing
His accompaniment to the fantastic narration by Harry Preston brings so much to his own writing , that the whole thing is far more than the sum of the parts. H.E. has created a perfect marriage of a fantastic tale, so in the style of H.G. Wells it is unbelievable , allied to a cross between a musical soundtrack and background atmospheric, again reminiscent of Jeff Wayne and Justin Hayward.
I am in awe, I finished the audiobook an emotional wreck, especially after the prologue narrated by Terry Thompson, and cannot wait for episode three, "Gateway to Mars"
I have to say this will certainly be my "book of July" and is now a very serious contender for my "Book of the Year". If you have ever liked Wells or Jeff Wayne's musical version, you will love this.

H.E. Wilburson’s Volume 2 of the Martian Diaries is a wonderful sequel to Volume 2, and in the spirit of the War of the Worlds. It is creative and imaginative, with unexpected plot twists and turns. I love the characters, especially George, who helps Ogilvy try to save the world from destruction. This audio book is definitely worth the listen!

I really hope readers can listen to both of these audio books. Such a treat for the sci-fi and War of the Worlds fans.
I enjoyed the first audio but I loved the story and the characters even more this time round. The narration, story-telling and music were brilliant.
The story carries on where it left off. Ogilvy wakes up in the hospital after the heat ray attack, he is still determined to solve the puzzle of the deadly red weed and how to kill it. Through his premonitions maybe the answer lies with the moon. We still have HMS Thunder Child which holds evidence, samples of the red weed which must be analysed.

There is a parallel universe, time-travel concept in this book that I really loved, maybe the red weed stores our memories and thoughts, maybe mankind influenced the Martians after all? Highly recommend, just brilliant!

Modern sequel to a classic SF novel:
I love how "Lake on the Moon" (along with the first book in the Martian Diaries series) updates the classic H.G.Wells' iconic story, taking it well beyond Wells' vision. Set in the same time period, "Lake on the Moon' is an audio narration complete with sound effects, musical score, and 2 narrators that make it come alive. H.E. Wilburson has created a classic SF tale that takes me back to my teen years when I enjoyed late-night radio stories (in the 80s not the 30s, I'm not that old!). We had a local rock station in the NY metro area that ran late-night "classic radio novels" and it mesmerized me. H.E. Wilburson took me back to those days, and I was no less mesmerized by this novel. Highly recommend for fans of classic scifi.

Ogilvy, the astronomer, wakes up in the hospital, covered in bandages after escaping a terrible Martian blast. His friend, Stent, the Astronomy Royal, was killed by the explosion. He vowed while lying recovering in hospital, that he would learn as much as possible about the Martians so that earth could finally be rid of them. 

This extraordinary audiobook, narrated by Terry Thompson and Harry Preston gives an insight into WW1, the Spanish flu pandemic with the added more deadly threat from Martian Red Dust. 

I sat spellbound while listening to this and wondered how H.E Wilburson had managed to create such a prize of literature, as I’ve always been convinced nobody could ever out-rank the original War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, but he has succeeded in giving us this astonishing follow-up in first, The Martian Diaries, Volume 1 and now Lake on the Moon. 

This might sound quite sad, but I can never get enough of these audiobooks. I start with the Original, War of the Worlds and then The Martian Diaries Part 1 and now, I have the epic Volume 2, Lake on the Moon. There is nothing I love more than walking along a beach with my headphones on, listening to these mind-blowing creations time and time again.

I love the bravery of this series, the sheer bravado of taking on this all-time sci-fi classic and taking the story beyond the bounds of the original, and doing so in a style that Mr Wells himself would likely approve of! Wilburson has captured the pacing and style of Wells and used it to project his story forwards, and this one certainly moves it on to significantly new ground making this part very much Wilburson's own.

However, not only did WIlburson take on the daunting task of progressing this wonderful old tale he chose to back it up with original music and sound effects. Given what has also gone before this is a brave statement from an exciting author. When you add all this to the narration style which is very sympathetic to the time period and the style of writing you have a winning combination.

I do think it's fair to say that in this second instalment, which is longer than the first, there is a slower pace and so the music and sound is less impactful than in the first episode. What this instalment does achieve very strongly though is to construct the story and atmosphere methodically taking it a long way beyond the ideas in the original book.

I admire the author very much for what he has produced so far, I don't envy him the task he faces now though. This one has taken the story on a long way and I am imagining a quite spectacular conclusion to this journey! Good luck Mr Wilburson!

I was looking forward to Lake On The Moon. This second part of The Martian Diaries. Straight away the atmospheric build-up was there. The characters and the background sounds were splendid, Then the gripping and very clever story began to unfold. My imagination was easily able to picture the scenes as I went back in time. The astronomer from the original War of the Worlds. Ogilvy in his hospital bed. He is covered in bandages. A survivor of the Martian heat ray. It all made for a compelling opening scene as with the ominous consequence of the Thunder Child aftermath. I could go on but that would mean accidental spoilers. 

All I will say is if you enjoyed War of the Worlds, The Martian Diaries one and two are a must. This second adventure has all the qualities of the first. It has been lovingly prepared and dynamically presented. I highly recommend Lake on the Moon.

I have been waiting for this story for a long time. I enjoyed the first book, The Day of The Martians so very much! 
This is well written and acted out! The voice actors do an excellent job and the sound effects really make the story come alive. Science fiction is my favorite genre, and both of these books are a wonderful extension of the classic story from H. G. Wells “The War of The Worlds”.

I really enjoyed the first volume of The Martian Diaries so I looked forward to hearing this, the sequel. I was not disappointed, if anything it is even better than the first volume! A must listen for any retro Science Fiction fans! Great fun and ideal for listening on road trips or on a vacation!

I felt some trepidation on starting Lake on the Moon. I had enjoyed The Day of the Martians (the first novel of The Martian Diaries series) so much. And I was worried it was my excitement that someone had stepped up to carry on Wells great novel. 

Thankfully, I shouldn’t have been worried at all! 

H.E. Wilburson has come on leaps and bounds with his storytelling. There were many truly gripping moments, and some moments of true terror with the Red Weed! He’s continued to remain faithful to the characters and tone of Wells but has taken the story into whole new avenues. 

I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I’ll just say that I really enjoy the central conceit in the story around Ogilvy and the Red Weed. It also sets up the next audiobook very well and I honestly can’t wait to find out what happens!

The small issues I’d had with the audio from the previous story have been totally cleared up and it’s a beautiful and professional recording. 

This is a fabulous story and for any War of the World fans, an absolute must listen!

Lake on the Moon is the next sequel in Martian Diaries audiobooks. This is a grand story and I loved listening to it, as it brought it to life. The war of the worlds is in the midst of the devastating and compelling alien invasion. I like that Wilburson was able to continue the iconic H. G Wells' story War of the Worlds, and create magnificent narrative stories. The narration was wonderful, and gave a life to the story with his voice and storytelling ability. This was a book I had to listen to from beginning to end. Absolutely remarkable. Great Characters, and it definitely adds to its own legacy. If there is more to come, I'll be right there to listen.

So honestly I didn't think I'd like the book (imitation rarely live up to hopes)
But H.E Wilbursons writing is so in the style that it is easy to feel that your listening to or reading an H.G Wells original.
A great follow up and I believe there is one more to come.

Simon - A Little Diamond From Mars!  
When I saw the author asking for reviewers on Goodreads for this I was intrigued, albeit it's fair to say a little dubious. Anyone approaching The War of the Worlds with music and voice following Mr Wayne's wonderful musical is surely just setting themselves up for people like me to lambast them...

But this is not a musical, it's one of those rare things, a mostly straight up Audiobook heavily backed by sound effects and incidental music that really works. Previously I've very much thought that what normally tends to succeed is either full cast audio productions like Audible have been producing or straight ahead audiobooks. Some books do have a little music and / or sound but they often seem like afterthoughts.

Written very much in the style of a sci-fi classic Wilburson evokes the feel of H G Wells but has also made the music and effects an integral part of his production. I wouldn't say that the narration has the very best of voice acting but for want of a better word the voices are just so splendidly appropriate and carry the story well. I loved this but I know that when music and effects are so prominent some people are not so keen, check the audio sample, it demonstrates some of the louder background. If you're okay with that it's not always that prominent and if you enjoy this brief snippet you should be fine with the rest.

The story itself is told very much like the original and moves fast with the glorious naiveté of a classic sci-fi novella. If like me you still carry visions of Martian fighting machines striding across London I think you'll smile as you listen to this and how the Earth responds to another deadly threat from the red planet.

The chances of this working so well might not have been quite a million to one but the author is clearly a talented fellow and has beaten the odds to produce a little Martian diamond.

Outstanding!

H.E. Wilburson did a brave and incredible job daring to go where others never would.

I had been meaning to listen to this for a while and finally managed to get around to listening while painting my floor. The speakers were on very loud which added to the sense of excitement and suspense. When the ships blasted the Martians from the Kent coast it felt like I was there watching them take a pounding. 

To follow up something as legendary as War of the Worlds is not an easy accomplishment and H.E. Wilburson should be very proud. Very proud indeed. 

I'm already looking forward to the next instalment and may even give the original a listen as my wife owns a copy on CD. 

I highly recommend giving this a listen, it will surprise you. It follows on from the original albeit a few years later, with the same cast of characters. It is tense, dramatic, and powerful. The narration and music: superb.

I cannot praise The Day of the Martians enough.

The audio book was unexpected and a great touch. After all, The War of the Worlds had been infamous for starting a mass panic when it was broadcast on American radio for an anthology series known as The Mercury Theatre on the Air. Listening to The Day of the Martians had me awestruck; the atmospheric music, the ambiance, the narration, and above all the story itself. It takes place in 1913 when science and speculation about aliens was still a bit of a niche interest. The Day of the Martians will capture listeners' imaginations and wonder. It certainly captured mine. I implore fans of H.G. Wells and fans of the science fiction genre to listen and savor the adventure which H.E. Wilburson has given us. I greatly appreciated Terry Thompson and Harry Preston's astounding performances. This was more than an audio book. This was, in many ways, a wonderfully executed tribute to H.G. Wells.

This audio book was so much fun! I loved it! The story kept me on the edge of my kindle for the entire tale. The narration and the sound effects were top notch. 

I felt like I was transported into the past and was witnessing these events myself. As the sequel to such a famous story it was handled quite well and felt so organic to the original story.

During the War of the Worlds all Martians were defeated by Earth's microbes - or were they? Ten years later humanity must once again prepare for a fight, complete with improved heat-rays, eccentric inventors, no-nonsense military chaps, and a protagonist very era-appropriately bemused by his wife's competence under duress (there is also a comet-cameo). Borrowing the manners and pacing of another era, the book's textflow and narration beautifully complement each other. With spot-on sound design and expressive, scene-appropriate music, listening to this book makes for a very stylish experience indeed!

I read this book with dimmed lights and cosy blanket on a cold night. This audiobook takes you right to the centre of the story, the possible invasion of the Martians (again) and the human scientific combat plans. Absolutely wonderful, loved the music, no Justin Heywood but beautiful instrumental pieces. The story is gripping and a fabulous continuation from the original book. Bold characters, great story line, clear narration, lovely voice. Well done Mr Wilburson!

This story could have been a sequel written by H G Wells. The style was very similar. The story was good and so was the narration. I liked the sound effects, but think the background music could have been toned down at times. Overall, a worthwhile listen.

The H.G Wells invasion classic, The War of the Worlds has blazed a trail through books, film and even music since its first release in 1897. Perhaps the most famous adaption was the audio version directed and narrated by Orson Welles; famously causing outrage and terror amongst radio listeners when it was originally broadcast in 1938.

The Day of the Martians picks up ten years after the original story when a martian capsule is discovered in Wales. Whilst investigating it becomes apparent that another, more powerful and devastating invasion is imminent.

This is an exciting and engaging story from beginning to end. It feels like the perfect younger sibling of the original and is very much on the same wavelength. Astronomer Ogilvy, from the original story, is a key player in developing and planning a fightback against the martians. It’s clever and unique and whether it will work or not kept me on the edge of my seat. It is a great, well plotted story.

The sound quality and music really bring the story to life. This is by no means just an audio book; it feels more like an audio drama. Special mention to the fantastic narrator Harry Preston who does a fabulous job of bringing the story to life.

Lynda Engler- Nostalgic for old radio shows
When I was a teenager in the late 70s and early 80s, a local radio station in NYC brought back old-time radio dramas for a while, late at night, and I thought it was fun to listen to them, imaging myself living in the 40s or 50s, listening to radio before TV took over the world (and later the internet!) This is one of those dramas. The narrators, the background music, the sound effects, all made me nostalgic for those "simpler times" of my youth. 
This is not your typical audiobook. The overly-dramatic story and the implausible notions in this type of SF are true classic scifi. It was wonderful reading a book that took place in 1913, that also felt like it was written in that era. The author did a fantastic job with the "feel" of this story. 
I look forward to Volume 2!

I was hooked on this sci-fi audio straight away. The narration is gripping plus the background music is haunting and atmospheric. The historic feel and the characters are marvellous. As the plot began to unfold, the story got better. It all leads to a fabulous climax and I would recommend this to any War of the Worlds fan. A splendid sequel.
